The beginning of what is now St. Paul’s Catholic Church historically may be said to date back from the establishment of St. Paul’s Major Seminary at its present site in 1938. The seminary chapel offered facilities for worship for the few lay persons who worked in the Seminary with the passage of time and the growth of Benin City, Consequently upon the creation of what became Bendel State;
The Seminary Church became a regular place for celebrating Sunday Mass for the people living in the G.R.A., Ogbe Quarters and environs. Technically, and in all aspects, the area was part of Holy Cross Parish with the approval however of the Most Rev. Patrick J. Kelly, the then Bishop of the Diocese of Benin City, the Rector of the Seminary looked after the spiritual needs of the new and growing community.
Almighty God our Father, fountain of love and holiness. You gave Vivian Ogu the missionary zeal to be an instrument of your divine love and a messenger of purity among the young. Through her campaigns for charity, she brought your love to orphans, the poor and the sick. Through her words, she motivated the young to be dedicated to you in love and purity. She courageousely bore witness to you by giving up her life to preserve her purity and virginity.
All powerful Father, in total submission to your will, I implore you to grant through the intercession of Vivian Ogu this favour for which I now ask.
And if it be in accordance with your divine will, may she be glorified in your church and celebrated as one of your Saints.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
